Lygia Clark is an important and influential artist of the second half century. Her art explores issues of figuration and abstraction. She also created geometric sculptures, and asymmetrical paintings. Clark is often considered to be the pioneer of Brazilian Neo-Concrete.
Clark studied with Isaac Dobrinsky, Fernand Leger and Roberto Burle Marx in her early career. In 1952, she had her first solo show in Paris. Soon after, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she immersed herself in the experimental art scene. She also participated in the Venice Biennale in Brazil and the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil.
Lygia was born in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) in 1920. After graduating from University of Rio de Janeiro, she worked as an artist, a therapist, and an art educator. Clark, a well-known artist, lived a turbulent and interesting life. She died in 1988. The Clark Museum in Rio de Janeiro will host an exhibit to honor her 100th birthday.
The exhibit includes 83 artworks. It covers Clark's entire career. The museum provides a glimpse into the pivotal years in Clark's development, from her first painting to her last work. The early works from the 1950s, for example, show how the artist moved from two to three dimensions. Breaking the Frame is a pair geometric abstractions featuring a wood block in the middle of the canvas. This asymmetrical piece was an important turning point in Clark's career.
